Investigators at Boston Children's Hospital report that infants dying suddenly and unexpectedly, in both safe and unsafe sleep environments, have underlying brainstem abnormalities and are not all normal prior to death.

Women taking immunosuppressive medications during pregnancy do not put their babies at risk

Women with chronic autoimmune diseases who take immunosuppressive medications during their first trimester of pregnancy are not putting their babies at significantly increased risk of adverse outcomes, according to a Vanderbilt study released online by the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles opens new outpatient care center in Santa Monica

Children's Hospital Los Angeles opened the doors of its new outpatient care center in Santa Monica today. The pediatric medical facility, Children's Hospital Los Angeles - Santa Monica, will be staffed by 10 physicians who are Board-Certified in seven specialties and subspecialties, including hematology-oncology, medical genetics, neurology, orthopaedics, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, and urology.

A team of researchers at UT Southwestern has found that as cholesterol is metabolized, a potent stimulant of breast cancer is created - one that fuels estrogen-receptor positive breast cancers, and that may also defeat a common treatment strategy for those cancers.

Children born extremely prematurely have up to a 19 times greater risk of retinal detachment later in life than peers born at term, according to a Swedish study published this month in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Children born to teenage parents continue to be at increased risk for injury

Although the number of children born to teenage parents has decreased since the 1990s, these children continue to be at an increased risk for injury, both accidental and intentional. This may be because many of these teenage parents are poor, uneducated, and lack parental safety and supervision skills. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers analyzed the types of injuries to children of teenage parents.

Study focusing on safety of adolescent bariatric surgery published in JAMA Pediatrics

Initial results of a first and largest of its kind study focusing on the safety of adolescent bariatric surgery were published this week in JAMA Pediatrics. The "Teen Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery" study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and is being conducted at five sites in the U.S., including Nationwide Children's Hospital.
