HHS: Enrollment in high-risk pools tops 20,000

Figures released Friday reflect the number of participants in the health overhaul's high-risk pools as of April. Meanwhile, Modern Healthcare reports that Kansas has widened it's high-risk pool to allow child-only plans.

Enrollment in new state-based insurance pools finally topped 20,000 in April, according to new figures released Friday by the Health and Human Services Department. The pools for high-risk patients have fallen far short of their enrollment targets, thanks in part to high premiums. Nationwide, the pools grew by a total of roughly 3,100 people in April — the most recent month for which data is available (Baker, 6/10).

Modern Healthcare: Kansas Widens High-Risk Insurance Pool To Allow Child-Only Policies
Kansas is expanding its high-risk insurance pool to allow uninsured children to gain coverage, according to a new state law. Uninsured children under age 19 will be eligible through the program, run by the Kansas Health Insurance Association. The legislation was sponsored by the Kansas Insurance Department (Vesely, 6/11).
