As part of their election-year strategy, some anti-abortion groups plan to force President Obama and congressional Democrats into a corner on an abortion-related issue.

Abortion foes are planning an election-year strategy aimed at forcing President Obama and congressional Democrats to take a potentially damaging stand on the issue. Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) on Monday unveiled legislation that would ban abortion in the District of Columbia beyond the 20th week after fertilization. The bill has the blessing of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), which just launched a super-PAC aimed at defeating Obama in November (Pecquet, 1/24).

A prominent anti-abortion-rights group has created a super-PAC to take on President Obama in 2012. The National Right to Life's political action committee, dubbed the Victory Fund, will focus primarily on defeating Obama and electing a "pro-life president," according to David O'Steen, the group's executive director. "The challenge posed by Obama is the greatest danger we've ever [faced]. We see this as the greatest challenge to abortions since Roe v. Wade," O'Steen said, referring to the Supreme Court decision (Levin, 1/23).
