Hospital collection company criticized for failing to turn over records to Congress

Medical billing services provider Accretive Health Inc failed to provide information on its debt collection practices sought by the U.S. Congress, according to a letter issued by two members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Chicago-based Accretive, which provides billing, insurance verification and other services to healthcare providers, has seen its shares lose more than half their value since January, when the Minnesota Attorney General sued the company alleging violations of patients privacy (6/21).

Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) repeated a request for information from Accretive Health after the company did not comply with a request for internal documents and a client list. In a letter to Mary Tolan, Accretive Health's CEO, Waxman and DeGette said the Chicago-based billing and collection company has failed to provide information requested in early May and has ignored meeting requests (Evans, 6/21).
