LUHS to renovate Postpartum Unit this summer

Loyola University Health System (LUHS) will renovate its Postpartum Unit to create a state-of-the-art area that provides a comfortable and convenient setting for mothers and infants. The renovation will begin this summer and will be complete by the end of the year. New fetal monitors also will be added to the Labor & Delivery Unit to provide doctors and nurses with advanced surveillance of infants prior to delivery.

"This renovation is part of Loyola's vision that looks at the patient's experience and recovery through the eyes of the patient," said Mary Lynn, DO, an obstetrician and gynecologist at LUHS. "We took into consideration the issues that matter most to women when having a baby and then set out to create a postpartum area that provides a soothing setting that is conducive to patient healing."

Fifteen postpartum rooms will be converted so that patients can expect to recover in private. The rooms will be decorated with natural colors to create a restful environment. The space also will offer comfortable gliders for mothers to rock their babies and an innovative gathering area that will convert for seating, dining and sleeping purposes. All rooms will be equipped with wireless Internet access and flat-screen televisions.

The postpartum unit is located in close proximity to Loyola's Level-III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, giving parents access to the highest level of care for premature and sick infants. The location of the NICU also makes it convenient for mothers to visit their infants while they recover in the hospital.
