Casting doubt on the employer mandate's future

Recent comments made by Obama administration allies triggered assurances from White House spokesman Jay Carney.

The Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire: Carney Dismisses Gibbs's Prediction Employer Mandate Will Die
President Barack Obama's former chief spokesman predicted that the employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act won't go into effect. The president's current chief spokesman, Jay Carney, said it will. The employer mandate, Mr. Carney said in his daily briefing with reporters, "will be phased in starting next year." ... Mr. Carney took a swipe at his predecessor's attempt at prophecy. "You know, I know, having spent time at the pundit's table prior to my life here, you know, you can make predictions all the time that turn out not to be true," he said (Favole, 4/3).

The Hill: Obama Allies Cast Doubt On Mandate
"It's a small part of the law. I think it will be one of the first things to go," Gibbs told a healthcare gathering in Colorado. ... During an event last month in Florida, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would look at reforming how the law impacted "small business of 50 or more" employees (Viebeck and Sink, 4/4).

The Fiscal Times: Top Dem Predicts Employer Mandate Will Be Repealed
The president's former press secretary's comments are out of step with his fellow White House colleague - Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, who favors the employer mandate and believes it will remain a fixture of the health care law and have a significant impact on how Americans receive health coverage in the future (Ehley, 4/3).
