Improving global health, food security among top 10 things to know about State Department, USAID

In this Huffington Post editorial piece, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Thomas Nides writes about "10 things you should know about the State Department and USAID" and what the department does "on behalf of the American people."

Among the 10 items, Nides includes helping to "save lives" and "protect our national security" through global health investments, helping "countries feed themselves" by "[b]uilding upon what we do best -- grow and produce food," and helping "in times of crisis ... from earthquakes in Haiti to famine in the Horn of Africa." He concludes, "The United States is a leader for peace, progress and prosperity, and the State Department and USAID help deliver that" (8/25).
