New Performance in Practice Module on Electrodiagnostic Report Writing from AANEM

The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) recently released a new Performance in Practice (PIP) Module on Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Report Writing.

"As quality patient care becomes a priority at several levels including education and practice, EDX physicians must, in turn, prepare quality EDX reports," stated AANEM Quality Improvement Chair Pushpa Narayanaswami, MBBS, DM, FAAN. "This PIP module will help physicians evaluate the quality of their EDX reports and identify areas of potential improvement. The PIP will then enable them to establish practices to achieve these improvements. The process is an ongoing program of education and practice improvement to ensure high quality EDX reports in terms of both data presentation and interpretation. The end result: well prepared EDX reports that help referring physicians provide high quality care to our patients."

PIPs are designed to show that physicians are able to investigate and evaluate their patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and improve their practice of medicine. They are a two-part quality improvement resource designed for clinically active physicians to evaluate whether they have shown practice improvement over the 10-year Maintenance of Certification (MOC) cycle required by their primary boards.

Both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR) require PIP modules to be completed as a portion of their maintenance of certification programs. ABPN and ABPMR are the primary certification boards for AANEM members.

AANEM Director of Education, Jackie Gunderson, thinks physicians will find great value in the EDX Report Writing PIP. "We're excited to launch this product. We believe that physicians practicing EDX medicine will find the document very user-friendly. The PIP offers pre and post implementation chart reviews, a toolkit for continued learning, and a feedback module which allows the physician to solicit patient and peer feedback," she said.

The AANEM PIP, when completed in its entirety, qualifies as one of three required ABPN PIP components. Both modules of the Report Writing PIP (clinical and feedback) are necessary to comply with ABPN requirements. The PIP also is in the approval process by the ABPMR and should be available soon for ABPMR Diplomates.

The PIP will be available online at www.aanem.org for purchase beginning Thursday, Dec. 22 at a cost of $99 to AANEM members and $149 to nonmembers.
