HHS awards $14.5 million to fund school-based clinics

School-based health centers in 29 states will receive $14.5 million to help upgrade their facilities or establish new sites, the Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement that the school-based clinics receiving the funds now are able to treat about 112,000 students a year. The new money will enable them to treat 165,000 students. Funds for the centers' expansion were authorized in the health care law (Norman, 12/8).

Baltimore was awarded $499,929 Thursday as part of a $14 million grant for school-based health centers around the country. The money comes from the national health care reform law and aims to increase the number of children served by 50 percent, or 53,000 kids (Cohn, 12/8).
