ESCEO and IOF honor Dr. Mary L. Bouxsein with ESCEO-IOF Herbert Fleisch Medal

Award presented by ESCEO and IOF on the occasion of the European Congress on Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO13-IOF) in Rome, Italy

Dr. Mary L. Bouxsein has been awarded the ESCEO-IOF Herbert Fleisch Medal in honor of her work in the field of skeletal fragility.

The annual award from the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) and the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), valued at 20,000 EUR, recognizes a researcher who has made outstanding and groundbreaking achievements in basic bone science.

The Medal was presented at an award ceremony held during the opening of the European Congress on Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis (ESCEO13-IOF), in Rome, Italy.

Professor John A. Kanis, IOF President, said, "The ESCEO-IOF Herbert Fleisch Medal is named in honour of the late Professor Fleisch, a pioneer in osteoporosis research. We are pleased that Dr. Mary Bouxsein, whose work has considerably influenced knowledge about bone biomechanics, strength and microarchitecture has been named the winner of this prestigious award."

Dr. Bouxsein currently holds joint appointments as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, adjunct Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Boston University, and is also a faculty member in the MIT-Bioastronautics Program. Her research focuses on understanding skeletal fragility from a biomechanics viewpoint, and includes studies using animal models and human cadaveric tissue, as well as clinical investigations. She also has a strong interest in the use of novel non-invasive imaging techniques to predict fracture risk and monitor response to osteoporosis therapies.
