4D Vision Gym’s workshop to demonstrate how vision therapy can treat concussions

Since approximately seventy percent of the neural connections in the brain are involved with vision and visual processing, how likely is it that a concussion will cause visual disturbances? Can potential problems be avoided or treated with vision therapy?

4D Vision Gym, Optometry and Vision Therapy will address these questions in a short presentation called Concussions: Keep Your Head in the Game by Recognizing the Signs of a Concussion. This complimentary workshop will take place on October 2, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at 181 B Shunpike Road in Cromwell.

Concussions are frequently in the news when they happen to professional athletes. UConn quarterback, Casey Cochran, for example, got a lot of publicity when he was forced to retire from the game because of multiple concussions. However, with an estimated four to five million people suffering from concussions every year, more attention should be given to the injury itself. There is a dire need for proper diagnosis and rehabilitation treatment. Too many children, adolescents and young adults do not report a concussion for fear of being kept out of school or a game. Early intervention can make a difference on the impact and healing time for a concussion.

At 4D Vision Gym's workshop, Senior Vision Therapist Corinne Williams will discuss the signs and symptoms of a concussion, how a concussion is diagnosed, the procedure for treatment, the team involved, and how vision therapy can help. Williams will also speak about the neurocognitive assessment tools that are used to determine when a patient can return to school, work or play. She will also review appropriate treatments for affected visual skills.
