Super Staple Classic bone fixation implant helps improve bone healing, reduce healthcare costs

Medical device manufacturers are developing products that are less invasive, contribute to faster medical procedures and help speed patient recovery. To accomplish this, they are increasingly utilizing advanced, biocompatible thermoplastics in their medical devices.

The Super Staple™ Classic, for example, provides a superior and instantaneous bone compression force designed to improve bone healing, and reduce complications and healthcare costs, according to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Metric Medical Devices, Inc. The bone fixation implant is pre-loaded into an easy-to-use delivery instrument.

The SuperStapleTMClassic bone fixation device from Metric Medical Devices utilizes high-strength, biocompatible polycarbonate from Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

After conducting material property evaluations for this medical device, Metric selected Makrolon® Rx2530 polycarbonate because of its high strength, temperature stability, clarity and biocompatibility.

“The performance of Makrolon Rx2530 has been excellent,” said Dan Wadsworth, vice president, Research and Development, Metric. “The Bayer MaterialScience team was remarkably responsive during the material selection and design phase.”

For optimum convenience and cost savings, the Super Staple™ Classic is offered as a sterile, disposable, complete procedure kit. Makrolon Rx2530 polycarbonate is injection molded to form the housing of the device, which is roughly the size of a syringe.

In addition to assisting with material selection, Bayer also conducted testing to demonstrate the material’s compliance with ISO-10993 and U.S. Federal Drug Administration biocompatibility guidelines.

“We worked closely with Metric, providing guidance related to selection of the Makrolon polycarbonate grade that best met the stringent requirements – including toughness and biocompatibility – for this application,” said Fred Woods, field market development, Polycarbonate, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

“The Super Staple™ Classic demonstrates yet again how medical device OEMs and the healthcare market rely on our Makrolon polycarbonate and technical expertise to develop life-changing applications,” said Bruce Fine, market segment leader, Medical and Consumer Products – Polycarbonates, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

Attendees at MD&M West Conference and Exposition, Feb. 10-13 in Anaheim, Calif., can visit Bayer’s booth (#2021) for more details about Bayer’s material solutions for medical applications.
