Neuron Markers for Serotonergic Neurons

The following article presents more information about the most frequently used serotonergic neuron markers.

The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) is found in the gastrointestinal tract, blood platelets, and the central nervous system (CNS). It is synthesized by the serotonergic neurons.

Tryptophan Hydroxylase (TPH)

The TPH is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of serotonin. It has two isoforms TPH1 and TPH2. The latter is found mainly in the brain.

Serotonin Transporter (SERT)

SERT stands for serotonin transporter. It is a transmembrane protein with the help of which the re-uptake of 5-HT from the synaptic cleft into the presynaptic neuron is possible.

Serotonin Transporter Inhibitors

Product Activity
Desvenlafaxine (ab145741) Potent SERT and NET inhibitor.
Potent SERT and norepinephrine transporter (NET) inhibitor.
Nisoxetine hydrochloride (ab141134) Potent SERT and NET inhibitor.
Duloxetine (ab143249) Dual NET and SERT inhibitor.
Venlafaxine hydrochloride (ab120715) Selective NET and SERT inhibitor.

Pet1

Pet1 is a crucial transcription factor that is responsible for the transcription of genes that are important for the metabolism, as well as for the reuptake of serotonin.
