Selectins are a class of cell adhesion molecules that take part in the early stages of leukocyte–endothelium interactions. They play a vital role in the trafficking of innate immune system cells, platelets and T lymphocytes.
Three groups of selectins exist: E-selectin (CD62E), P-selectin (CD62P) and L-selectin (CD62L). Each group interacts with its corresponding glycoprotein (mucin) ligands on particular tissues. The table below illustrates selectins and their counter receptors or ligands.

Selectins play an active role in constitutive lymphocyte homing, cancer metastasis and chronic and acute inflammation. Thus, they are now the hot targets for developing therapeutics for the treatment of several diseases, like malignancies and sickle cell disease.
